SYDNEY, June 25 (World Daily Times) — Leah Stewart, who was attacked by a shark at Coogee Beach in Sydney on June 13, woke from an induced coma after doctors reduced her sedation and told her mother and partner Fernando, “I love you,” her brother Joshua Stewart said in a family update.

Joshua Stewart said doctors were able to extubate Leah after 10 days in an induced coma, following multiple surgeries, including surgery to remove her arm and treat other serious injuries. The brief awakening happened in the ICU.

By Thursday, Joshua Stewart said Leah was awake, no longer in critical condition and able to communicate with family and medical staff. He said the recovery had come sooner than the family expected.

Joshua Stewart also said Leah had been reunited with her young daughter, August, for the first time since the attack. He said it was the first night Leah and August had ever spent apart.
