WASHINGTON, June 25 (DC Times Online) — The Senate rejected Tim Kaine’s Iran war powers resolution 50-47 on Wednesday, blocking a measure that would have required President Donald Trump to pull U.S. forces from hostilities involving Iran unless Congress authorized further action. Sen. Rand Paul voted present.

Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voted for the resolution, while Sen. John Fetterman voted no. The measure had advanced last month on a 50-47 procedural vote.

The vote came after Trump met behind closed doors with Senate Republicans over lunch and criticized them over the earlier Iran vote, Sen. Bill Cassidy said afterward. Cassidy said Trump “raised his voice” and “I lost my temper.”

Kaine, a Virginia Democrat, sponsored the resolution as part of Congress’ effort to assert its war powers over Iran. The Senate had also approved a separate Iran resolution earlier in the week.

After the vote, Trump thanked allies on Truth Social and wrote that the vote “puts Iran on notice.”
